New Nokia Internet Tablets with HSDPA connectivity coming soon
|
| Nokia has just revealed some details about their upcoming Internet Tablet models based on the Maemo (Linux) platform. The news is really exciting as the new models are going to include everything I've always dreamed about: HSDPA connectivity (which finally means access to the Internet everywhere), high-resolution camera and powerful OMAP3-based processor. My-Symbian's sister site devoted to Internet Tablets, My-Maemo.com, is still in the works, but the news is truly motivating so I'll be doing my best to assign more resources and efforts to prepare the site for its launch before or along with the introduction of the new models. Stay tuned! |

Symbian OS, S60, UIQ and MOAP unite to create one open mobile software platform. Nokia to buy Symbian and establish Symbian Foundation
|
Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS, S60, UIQ and MOAP to create one open mobile software platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone they plan to establish the Symbian Foundation to extend the appeal of this unified software platform. Membership of this non-profit Foundation will be open to all organizations. This initiative is supported by current shareholders and management of Symbian Limited, who have been actively involved in its development. Plans for the Foundation have already received wide support from other industry leaders.
To enable the Foundation, Nokia today announced plans to acquire the remaining shares of Symbian Limited that Nokia does not already own and then contribute the Symbian and S60 software to the Foundation. Sony Ericsson and Motorola today announced their intention to contribute technology from UIQ and DOCOMO has also indicated its willingness to contribute its MOAP(S) assets. From these contributions, the Foundation will provide a unified platform with common UI framework. A full platform will be available for all Foundation members under a royalty-free license, from the Foundation's first day of operations.
Contributions from Foundation members through open collaboration will be integrated to further enhance the platform. The Foundation will make selected components available as open source at launch. It will then work to establish the most complete mobile software offering available in open source. This will be made available over the next two years and is intended to be released under Eclipse Public License (EPL) 1.0.
The Foundation's platform will build on the leading open mobile software platform, with more than 200 million phones, across 235 models, already shipped by multiple vendors and tens of thousands of third-party applications already available for Symbian OS-based devices.

Symbian OS with SQL and LBS
|
Symbian Limited yesterday announced Symbian SQL and an advanced Location Based Services (LBS) architecture – two new technologies that herald the next generation of mobile computing by offering dramatic enhancements in the vital areas of mass data handling and LBS. Mobile phones featuring Symbian's LBS offering were recently launched in Japan. In Europe, Symbian's LBS architecture will appear in mobile phones later this year. Symbian SQL will be featured in phones shipping in the second half of 2008 and be available to application developers via a download in Q2 2008.
SQLite, an established open source technology widely used in products such as Mozilla's Firefox, has been implemented by Symbian to create Symbian SQL, a robust and highly scalable database management system for Symbian OS. Symbian SQL makes retrieving and sorting terabytes of data and multimedia fast and efficient without compromising performance. Application developers can also take advantage of Symbian SQL by using a standard query language when working with databases on Symbian OS, helping to reduce maintenance costs and application footprints. To support the open source community, Symbian is contributing technology improvements back into the SQLite open source project and is a charter member of the SQLite Consortium launched in December 2007.
Symbian's LBS architecture offers the most extensive LBS-rich solution of any OS, supporting multiple positioning technologies including A-GPS, network-based and Wi-FI to provide fast and accurate location information. Handset manufacturers do not need to invest separately in developing location support, dramatically reducing the time it takes to create GPS-enabled devices. Developers can cost-effectively target their LBS applications across multiple Symbian OS platforms, including S60, UIQ and MOAP, due to the consistent set of APIs offered by Symbian's LBS architecture.

Nokia N800 Internet Tablet review
|
Not a Symbian OS device and not even a phone, but it's such a nice and useful piece of technology providing the best mobile web browsing I've ever experienced, that it's really worth introducing to Symbian OS phones' users and recommending as an accessory for owners of S60 and UIQ smartphones with small, low resolution screens. The future of Symbian OS: ScreenPlay, FreeWay and Demand Paging
|
Symbian Limited today announced new ground-breaking technologies to power future versions of the Symbian operating system. The newly announced technologies offer dramatic enhancements in the vital areas of graphics, connectivity and performance.
ScreenPlay is the new graphics architecture in Symbian OS. It gives users big screen effects in their pockets while ensuring long battery life. ScreenPlay is designed for mobile devices with user interfaces which integrate high definition video content, life-like games and animations. It significantly enhances content presentation in versatile, yet simple new ways - by using transparency and overlays, for example. ScreenPlay offers high performance in a scalable fashion - working purely in software on mid-range devices and taking advantage of hardware acceleration when present on high-end devices.
FreeWay is the new and unrivalled IP networking architecture in Symbian OS, providing broadband speeds in your pocket. On mobile broadband networks, FreeWay delivers the capability for super fast download speeds, high quality audio/video streaming and crystal-clear VoIP calls. FreeWay supplies high bandwidth that is suitable for Super3G/LTE, WiMax and beyond - ensuring performance high enough to allow users to download an MP3 file in seconds. FreeWay also guarantees users smooth switching between connection types and networks so that they can remain mobile at all times. A key feature of FreeWay is its compatibility with existing applications such as web browsers, allowing these to take advantage of the benefits of FreeWay without any additional development.
Demand Paging is an application of virtual memory seriously reducing physical memory (RAM) usage and making it possible to run large programs requiring more memory than available in the machine. It also dramatically speeds up phone boot up and application start times. This technology will be available in Symbian OS 9.3 and up. |

Improved Symbian Signed Processes
|
Based on developer feedback, the Symbian Signed process has been improved to make signing faster, easier and cheaper for developers driving growth in the number of Symbian applications. Developers are now more easily able to access device capabilities that were once restricted, enabling further innovation. Symbian announced a new set of test criteria and procedures for testing and signing applications:
* Open Signed – provides a signing process using Developer Certificates enabling an application to be installed on a limited number of devices controlled by declared IMEIs (unique phone identification numbers). Open Signed is designed to support the developer community, open source and educational communities. The maximum number of devices that each application can be installed on has now been increased tenfold, from 100 to 1000.
* Express Signed – an entirely new process to allow software developers with Publisher IDs to instantly sign all applications that do not require access to the more sensitive device functions, allowing faster time-to-market. Developers can now sign applications on Expressed Signed for as little as $20.
* Certified Signed – for those applications that require access to the sensitive device manufacturer capabilities and/or where independent testing is required.

Symmetric Multi Processing (SMP) - multicore CPUs coming to Symbian OS
|
Symbian today announced Symbian OS support for the ARM Symmetric Multi-processor (SMP) architecture. SMP support in future versions of Symbian OS will use multiple CPU cores to provide "performance on demand" – battery life will be improved by accessing cores only when running demanding high-end multimedia applications and powering them down when they are not in use. The ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore multicore processor was announced earlier today at the ARM Developers' Conference. Symbian and ARM are working together closely on supporting Cortex-A9 MPCore multicore processor-based CPUs in Symbian OS.
SMP CPUs consist of multiple cores which can be individually powered up and down by the operating system. This delivers high performance for high-end applications such as games, browser-based intelligent services, and media-rich applications such as video streaming or TV recording, while offering low power consumption when the device is idle or executing less performance-critical tasks. Symbian has already started to deliver SMP technologies to its customers and will roll out the above incremental developments in future versions of Symbian OS. Details of this will be announced in due course. The first Cortex-A9 MPCore processor-based Symbian smartphones are expected in 2010.

Rest In Peace Bret.....
|
Bohdan Tyminski known as Bret was a moderator of the Polish part of My-Symbian discussion forums. He had been with us since the very beginning: since early Nokia 9000/9110 Communicator times, i.e. for more than 8 years. Bret suddenly disappeared from the forums after last Christmas. Two days ago we found his obituary in the Internet - he passed away on December 29th, 2006 at the age of 39... Bret was one of the most friendly, bright and disinterested persons I've ever met in the Internet. Despite being a handicaped and ill person (which I found out only recently as he never disclosed it), he had always been extremely helpful and kind for everyone. This website, especially the Polish part of it, owes him a lot and probably wouldn't exist if not the enormous effort he put into running it and helping our members. We will always remember Bohdan and thousands of his posts and articles will be here as long as this site is alive. Rest in peace, bret, you will always live in our memories. THANK YOU for everything. My-Symbian will never be the same again without you...
--------
Bret byl jedna z najbardziej pogodnych, zyczliwych i przyjaznych osob spotkanych przeze mnie w Internecie. Zegnaj Bohdanie. DZIEKUJE Ci za wszystko. My-Symbian bez Ciebie juz nigdy nie bedzie taki sam...
Wszyscy, ktorzy pamietaja breta z naszego serwisu moga pozegnac sie z Nim i wyrazic kondolencje na naszym forum dyskusyjnym. |
